In Réjouissances, Marianne Tricot reinterprets scenes from pornographic films as a series of small, luminous paintings. By cutting, isolating and recomposing bodies, rooms and gestures, she shifts the images away from their original context and opens them to another kind of attention: more intimate, more tender, more humorous, and more ambiguous.
The project begins with a simple but powerful gesture: looking at pornography as a visual culture, then taking it apart in order to rebuild it differently. Through colour, softness and composition, Tricot transforms images often shaped by the male gaze into fragile scenes of affection, desire and play. What remains is no longer the explicitness of the source material, but a collection of forms, embraces, domestic spaces and emotional tensions.
The book is also accompanied by Porno ou pas porno, est-ce la question?, a conversation between Marianne Tricot and filmmaker and activist Olympe de Gê, which extends the project’s questions around erotic imagery, representation, pleasure and political reappropriation.
